The linking of the Waitaki Lakes from Tekapo and Pukaki to Ohau, Ruataniwha, Benmore, Aviemore and, ultimately, Waitaki via canals and hydro dams is an amazing engineering feat only bettered by the stunning scenery. After spending time at both Tekapo and Pukaki (staying at Twizel) we headed for Oamaru via the remainder of the Waitaki Lakes scheme – particularly enjoying Lake Benmore.
