It was a beautiful sunny morning as we drove from Tekapo to Pukaki. Pukaki was splendid and we drove a short way up the north side capturing a few photos and a family camping by the lake with the Southern Alps in the distance. It was my third visit to the area and had yet to see Mt Cook / Aoraki. Despite the clear blue skies above there were clouds over the Alps and Aoraki remained concealed to us. We stayed overnight in Twizel and were rewarded with a glimpse of Aoraki in the far distance from our second floor kitchen window in the morning before heading up to Mt Cook. There were relatively few visitors and the Heritage facilities were only partly open – but we had clear views of Mt Cook/Aoraki – which was spectacular from a distance but upstaged by Mt Sefton when close up.
