Travelling north from Dunedin to Timaru we saw a sign that said take a detour to visit Waimate. So we did and were rewarded with a charming Canterbury rural town. With a population a little under 3000, Waimate is known for its Edwardian architecture and wild Wallabies. We avoided the Wallabies but spent an hour or two wandering the town capturing many of the buildings and features that caught our eye – the Waimate Transport site in the original Empress Flour Mill the highlight .
