We arrived at Lake Manapouri late afternoon for a sneak look ahead of our trip across the lake the next morning. The weather and lake were splendid. The next morning we set off on the launch to cross to the power station and a bus trip via Wilmot Pass to Doubtful Sound – but that is for another gallery. The weather was still fine, although it was a crisp morning, and we enjoyed our trip across the lake with vistas of snow capped mountains, the deep waters of the lake and the beech forests before arriving at our destination. The power station was controversial when it was built and the sole use of the power carried out across the longest single span of power lines in New Zealand remains contentious – but the lake is simply gorgeous.
