As we were driving north from Westport to Karamea the sign on a side road said 8km to spectacular views. Denniston was much more than that. Spectactular views 518m above the Tasman Sea yes – plus a story of a coal mining community and the mine itself – not so long abandoned. We were there on a splendid autumn day. It obviously isn’t always so endearing – as the words of the poem suggest:

Damn Denniston
Damn the track
Damn the way both there and back
Damn the wind and damn the weather
God damn Denniston altogether

Anyway, Taylor and I enjoyed our diversion and the splendid photo opportunities it afforded.
